I decided to update my drivers recently (specs below) and went ahead and downloaded the most recent ones. During the installation, my computer just restarted. I tried again to see at exactly what point it shuts off, and it was during the ATI Installation Manager installation. Then, I proceeded to try to uninstall the Installation Manager, only to be faced with yet another crash (Oh the irony...). So, the ATI Installation Manager is preventing me from updating my drivers, and I can't uninstall it. What can I do short of a format?

I was hoping to buy a good sound card. Someone on this forum told me to get an X-FI Auzentech Prelude. I was going to buy an X-Fi Fatal1ty card, but was worried because the PCIe 1x slot is too close to my graphics card, which gets over 100 *C under heavy load. The PCI slot is located a good few inches away from my GPU. From the looks of it, the Auzentech Prelude appears to use a PCI slot. Judging from the appearance of the connectors. The only problem is, is that I cannot find this card being sold at any store. Do I have to buy it off the internet? The store I bought my computer from, "Fry's Electronics," does not sell this sound card. I would probably have to look at different stores to see if they sell it.

I have a Foxconn G33 motherboard.

Is Auzentech Prelude better than the Fatal1ty X-Fi cards as someone on another forum claimed? Here is a photo of the inside of my Gateway FX 6710-01 gaming desktop. Notice the PCI slot is at the bottom of the case, and wouldn't get cooked by the enormous heat from the GPU. The PCIe 1x slot is directly underneath the GPU. It isn't visible in the photo.

Just a question, but I have a 5.1 sound system which is about Four-Five years old, that I used with my old computer. Would they still be compatible with my new sound card?

From Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.N), riding on a $1.25 billion payment from Intel Corp (INTC.O) to settle their disputes, plans to buy back up to $1.4 billion of debt to improve its risk profile.

Shares of AMD rose 8.91 percent on the news, which came about a week after the chip maker announced a settlement with larger rival Intel on all their outstanding legal battles.

AMD said on Wednesday it started a tender offer for up to $1 billion of 5.75 percent convertible senior notes due 2012. It also said it would redeem 7.75 percent senior notes due December 18, 2009, or about $390 million of debt.

"Any time you have as much debt as AMD has on their balance sheet, you just worry that if economic conditions weaken, and sales fall, and various bad things happen that you could end up with a financially stressed company," said FTN Equity Capital Markets analyst Joanne Feeney.

By paying off the debt, AMD is reducing that risk and can attract more conservative investors, she said.

To finance the $1 billion convertibles buyback, AMD said it would issue $500 million of senior notes due 2017 in a private offering, and use the Intel payment. Moody's Investors Service gave the notes a rating of B2, or a speculative "not prime" rating.

Although AMD's chip-design arm eked out a profit in its fiscal third quarter, the company has been steadily bleeding market share to Intel, whose microprocessors reside in 80 percent of the world's computers.

AMD reported in its fiscal third quarter that it has just under $3.2 billion of net debt.

During the AMD's analyst conference in early November, Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert said he planned to keep about $1 billion cash on hand for the foreseeable future, using the rest for debt reduction.

Its shares rose 59 cents to $7.21 on the New York Stock Exchange.

I'm sorry for the length and amateurish quality of my post, but I don't know where else to turn or what else to do. I seem to have hit a brick wall with my problem and I'm praying that someone might have a suggestion.

I bought a PC from Zoostorm, and at first I was very happy with it. It's by far the best PC I have ever owned, and it worked beautifully for a few days.

The problems initially began when I played WoW, but they're happening so often now and outside of gaming that I am beginning to wonder if the system is ever going to work at all, and what on earth is causing them.

I think it's related to my graphics card as I have read on several forums that it's particularly buggy, but to be honest I'm not sure. My knowledge on computers isn't great.

The problems I am having consist of freezing during gameplay including looping of sound. I managed to ctrl, alt + del once and came back to the game working perfectly again. I think the other time required a reboot.

The other problem is more severe and becoming more frequent. If it occurs in game then it starts with my cursor disappearing. I can still move and graphically everything looks fine. But tabbing out of the game causes a black screen with a flashing start menu. My toolbar will be at the top of the screen. Pressing the Start button has no effect, and I cannot ctrl, alt + del. I have to reset every time. This occurs out of game too. I can go to the bathroom to come back finding a black screen and no way to get out of it except to reset. I am experiencing this up to 6-7 times a day.

I initially though it was an overheating issue, and so I downloaded a little Vista gadget that monitors my card temperature and fan speed. The highest I've ever seen it go is 48C. I've only ever seen the fan come on once. When I reboot after a black screen the first thing I do is check the temperature only to find each time it's perfectly normal.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I'm scared of touching anything in case I forfeit my warranty, and I'm frightened to mess around with drivers in case I make the problem worse. I have yet to come across any kind of a solution.

I was hoping to attach a dxdiag, but can't find a way to do it without taking up too much space. I can give a few system specs here, but not really sure what's needed:

Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1

Intel(R) Core (TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @2.83GHz (4 CPUs)

8124MB RAM

The card is an ATI Radeon 4870 (not certain of make). I believe it's a 512MB DDR3. I'm fairly sure I'm running Catalyst 9.6.

If anyone has any ideas or even if they are experiencing the same issues, I'd love to hear from you! Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Advanced Micro Devices discussed the Hemlock high-end graphics card due next week and third-generation ultra-thin laptop technology, among other topics, at the AMD Financial Analyst Day on Wednesday.

"Hemlock will get launched next week," said AMD Senior Vice President Rick Bergman, speaking Wednesday morning at the conference which was streamed live. "It's in production. You'll be able to buy it at e-tailers around the world. You can see there are two GPUs. Five Teraflops out of this baby," he said. (GPU stands for graphics processing unit. A teraflop is a trillion floating point operations per second, a key indicator of graphics performance.)

Hemlock is expected to be appear as an HD 5900 series product--what some reports have called the HD 5970.

Bergman also addressed AMD's third-generation "Nile" ultra-thin laptop platform. "Bring the real PC experience into the ultra-thin. Battery life well north of seven hours," Bergman said. This is due in the first half of 2010. Ultra-thin is a new category of inexpensive laptops that is priced just above Netbooks.

Another technology dubbed "Danube" will also be rolled out next year. Danube will be AMD's first quad-core laptop platform and support both Windows 7 DirectCompute technology and Apple's OpenCL. Both of these technologies utilize the GPU as a processor to accelerate everyday or "general purpose" compute applications. Danube is also slated for the first half of 2010.

In 2011, AMD will introduce "Fusion," which combines the main processor with the graphics chip. "First Fusion processor in 2011. 32-nanometer quad-core. Leveraging (Windows 7) DX-11 graphics," Bergman said. AMD is currently moving to 45-nanometer technology. Generally, the smaller the chip geometry, the faster and more power efficient the processor is.

Probably the single most important codename dropped on Wednesday was Bulldozer. This will be a complete revamp of AMD's x86 architecture. "Brand new x86 ground-up development from AMD. It will bring that big uptick in performance. That rolls into our processor family in 2011," Bergman said. Samples for customers will be available in the first half of 2010, he said.

Bobcat will also be a "brand new x86 core. Geared for value and energy efficiency," Bergman said.

Source

Maybe we can get some AMD laptops now!

overstrict admins (they wont let anyone really mention ATI)

annoying people who dont answer questions!

You have to click on the smileys before they came up with a description, with ati you just roll the mouse over it. nifty lol

and so on...

For example, i explained how i think nvidia has always tried to keep the top record by the release of the 9800gtx+ over the standard 9800gtx just to beat ati's 4850... and the release of the gtx295 to beat the 4870x2 just because they wanted the fastest card again. My post was deleted by a moderater because it was 'irrelevant and incorrect'

Anyway nvidia in general is annoying me, reminds me of apple too much. Happy to join you guys on the dark side. I was welcomed with a lovely layout of black and red

(just for the record i have both nvidia and ati hardware so i am not biased lol)

I have a desktop I just built. It uses an Asus M4A79 Deluxe Mother board with the AMD FX chipset and setup for CorssoverX, AMD Phenom Quad Core 9950 Black, Antec 1000watt Power Supply, 8gig of Patriot DDR memory on dual channel, Thermatake Case with CPU liquid cooling system, 2 Western Digital Velociraptor 300gig 10,000rmp hard drives in a SATA Raid, Dual ATI Radeon 4870 X2 PCIE on CrossfireX, a samsung 22" HD moniter, a Sony quad layer DVD-WR and using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I have 6 high velocity case fans. I replace the fan on the Thermatake liquid cooling system and also installed a tri-fan system to put in cool for the liquid cooler. I put 2 fans on the back sides of the 4870x2's. The problem I am having is the systems shuts down. Both the 4870x2's both get very hot. The upper one that is GPU 1 seems to be warmer. I switched out the monitor with a spare Samsung 22" LCD monitor I have and it is same problem. I don't see a need to overclock with what I have so am running it all in default settings. The air coming from the back of the ATI cards is very hot also. The system shuts down from what I assume is heat problem after about 15-20min. I use the latest ATI drivers and am at a loss to what the issue is. I considered removing one if the ATI cards but I figure I bought them to use togther and I really want to make this system stable. Please help!! Is my PWRSupply too small? Could a card be bad? I am hoping ATI has tested this config since they say the best match for a 4970x2 is ideal match for a 4870x2. I hope someone can help...I have run out of ideas.

Paul describes how to achieve this cheaper way to get a clean install of windows7 on his Supersite for windows

Fist, perform a normal clean install of the OS by booting the PC with the Upgrade Setup disc and stepping through Setup.

After performing the clean install, ensure that there are no Windows Updates pending that would require a system reboot. (You'll see an orange shield icon next to Shutdown in the Start Menu if this is the case).

Then, open regedit.exe with Start Menu Search and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/

Change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0".

Open the Start Menu again and type cmd to display a shortcut to the Command Line utility. Right-click this shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." Handle the UAC prompt.

In the command line window, type: slmgr /rearm

Then tap ENTER, close the command line window and reboot. When Windows 7 reboots, run the Activate Windows utility, type in your product key and activate windows. It should just work.

'The old install twice trick from vista has been reported to work for 7also'
