Hello!

I am trying to use AMD RAID 1 in Ubuntu 12.04. I am able to create RAID 1 and install the system to it with no problem. I tested the drives and they are indeed synced. However the problem arrives when I tested the situation of exchanging a failed drive. Within Ubuntu I cannot get the drives to sync back. Windows users do it within RaidXpert software with ease, however there is no Linux version to be found. The thing is, manual describes the installation for Linux, stating that the software is on CD, which indicates that there should be one. Is there any way to download this software, since I cannot find it on my software CD (I am using a HP microserver H36L, which uses AMD chipset).

Navigating to the AMD website and selecting:

Find a Driver -> Motherboard / Chipset -> AMD 7-Series Chipsets -> All 7-Series Chipsets -> Windows XP 32-Bit

Leads to this page where the XP Tab lists 'AMD Chipset Drivers' and 'AMD Raid Drivers'

Both are the same size, revision number, and release date, but they do not have the same contents: The 'AMD Chipset Drivers' package contains "amd_sata.sys" nested in "\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\SB7xx\AHCI_svr\XP\" while the 'AMD Raid Drivers' contains "ahcix86.sys" in the "\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\SB7xx\RAID\XP\" folder.

amd_sata.sys comes with a ReadMe.rtf, which says it is for Windows Server 2003 & 2008 with no mention of XP aside from its presence in the "\XP\" folder, and the XP Tab on the Website. Attempting to inject this driver during Windows XP installation with an F6 Floppy or via nLite will fail with either a "cannot find amd_sata.sys" or 'No device' error, depending on if nLite imports in textmode. ahcix86.sys on the other hand, will slipstream and\or install just fine, but cannot access S.M.A.R.T.

This isn't ideal, especially on a new drive where it is useful to ensure working order. It also leads to a number of questions:

Is the amd_sata.sys package actually confirmed to be working for Windows XP, or is this an error?

Is there any meaningful difference between ahcix86.sys and amd_sata.sys in practice? I'm under the impression that ahcix86.sys can't access S.M.A.R.T. because it's a raid driver - or inversely, that amd_sata.sys can access S.M.A.R.T. and with similar performance in a non-raid setup.

If it is intended for use with XP, how are you supposed to install it? You need the driver to detect the drive you're installing the driver on, and while it seems to come with a windows installer, you need the driver to install windows before you can install the driver in windows. Neither the N-Lite nor the F6 Floppy method seem to work, and killing my infant grandfather didn't help either.

If windows has already been installed using ahcix86.sys, is it possible to switch to amd_sata.sys (presumably via the installer) without repercussions? I could foresee significant complications if it fails to boot after installing amd_sata.sys the way it does before install, and then can't roll back the driver because it can't detect the drive at all.

(For what it's worth, relevant tech-specs include: ASRock M3A770DE & Jetway X-Blue 78GA3 Motherboards (AMD 770\780 Chipsets) with OCZ Vertex II SSDs. ..and yes, bios is set to ACHI.)

Installing the AMD southbridge drivers do not install propertly in WHS2011. Normally you can install Windows 7 drivers in WHS2011 but the southbridge/USB 3.0 installation software does not seem to detect the hardware properly in WHS2011. I was able to get the drivers completely installed and working by following the steps outlined here: http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?/topic/27006-amd-usb-30-drivers/ in post #8.

It seems to be that all the drivers work correctly in WHS2011 but the installer is not smart enough to install them in this OS. I have read that others have the same issue under WHS 2011 and AMD southbridge/USB 3.0 drivers. Is there a way for me to complete a bug report to get AMD's attention? Thank you.

I'm having some trouble getting RAID 5 to work on a machine I recently upgraded with new disks.

After configuring my RAID setup during startup my RAID 0 system drives (2x Corsair SSDs) worked fine and Windows 8 64-bit was installed without any problems, but the RAID 5 array I created (3x WD 1TB) is showing as individual disks under "Disk Management" in Windows 8.

I tried using RaidXpert under Windows to re-create the array, but there RAID 5 doesn't even show as an option...

Has anyone got any ideas on what it takes to get this to work, or am I going to have to stick to the abysmal write speeds that "Windows Storage Spaces" have?

The motherboard I have is an Asus Crosshair IV Formula (AMD 890FX/SB850) and a Phenom II 1090T plus 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws-X. I have the latest drivers and software installed, plus upgraded to the latest BIOS version before OS installation.

Afternoon folks...My mobo is an Asus M4a79xtd evo. The AMD chipset drivers originally installed were from the Asus website & date back to 2010...& have had no probs.

I found there were updated drivers on this site (2013) & installed them a few weeks ago.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/raid_windows.aspx#2

(It say they are for the 700 series.) The install didn't seem to go too well...& said there were errors installing (or something along those lines)...& it took an age to open folders/move mouse etc until I rebooted.

Didn't realise till yesterday that bf3 mp was rubberbanding/jerking a lot/ far cry 3 jerky as hell because of the install...reinstalled the old drivers & everything back to normal.

They seem to be the right drivers for this board? (or am I wrong). Just like to keep things up to date if possible & can't understand why they had an adverse effect..would try again but don't want to go thru that massive slowdown after initial install...Any thoughts? TIA..Andy. (for now it's a case of if it aint broke..)

It is recognized as a RAID array in Windows after install of the appropriate driver. A separate install of Scientific Linux 6.3 (RHEL 6.3 clone) recognizes the drives as part of a RAID array and at least does not try to mount them, which at least protects them, though that also removes them from use.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro using an MSI 890GXM-G65 motherboard. This motherboard has an AMD SB850 chipset.

I am using the latest BIOS and AMD RAID drivers. I have an SSD as the boot drive as MBR and am using two Seagate 3 Tb drives ST3000DM001 configured for RAID1 as GPT.

I found that I am unable to create a VHDX or VHD on the RAID1 drive. When I use the Disk Manager to try and create the VHDX I get the following error message.

Virtual Disk Manager

The sector size of the physical disk on which the virtual disk resides is not supported.

The problem seems to be that the sector size, bytes per sector in FSUTIL display, is 1024 rather than the older 512?

Several webpages seem to mention that this problem was fixed with Hyper-V Server 2012 and by implication this should also be fixed with Windows 8?

One article that mentioned the newer Advanced Format drives is this one.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2510009

I am able to use the RAID1 with Windows 8 for all other files, but not when trying to create a VHDX or VHD.

I found that if I took these same two Seagate 3 Tb drives and installed them on an Intel DQ77MK motherboard then I ended up with 512 sector size and was able to create a VHD on the 3 Tb RAID1 drive.

I tried these same two Seagate 3 Tb drives as RAID1 on another AMD motherboard, MSI A55M-P33 with an AMD A55 chipset, and this had the same problem as my original MSI 890GXM-G65 motherboard.

Is this a design problem with the AMD RAID driver, i.e., not allowing me to get 512 sector size, and that's the reason I cannot get this to work? It seems odd that I can use these same physical drives as RAID1 on an Intel motherboard, but not on two AMD motherboards.

Hello!

Is there any chance for fixed ahci driver soon?

I fed up with only renamed ahci drivers since 2012 april(12.4=12.5=12.6=etc... = 13.1 , and BSOD maker drivers since 2012 Jan.

And of course, I reported the problem zillion times before. You know the problem, You know the solution, why we getting only renamed drivers dear AMD?

AND You renamed only the legacy VGA drivers too (12.6=13.1)

Thank You

I am having a problem with the harddrive making almost constant high-pitch noise in Windows 7 and 8, and it is really annoying. The noise comes just after booting into Windows 7 or 8 - there is no noise when installing, nor is there any noise in Windows XP or Linux. I have tried two different harddrives, and the same happens. So it must be a driver issue, but installing the latest AMD Chipset Driver (AHCI SATA driver) for Windows 8 results in error and windows repair.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/raid_windows.aspx

Motherboard: asus m3a78 emh hdmi (AMD 780G) latest bios (1302)
Harddrives: WD Caviar GP (WD5000AACS) and WD Caviar BLU (WD10EZEX)

Any suggestions?

Hi guys!

I haven't been using AMD since my good old 3400+ but now I'm back.

Unfortunately I seem to have run in to some problems with the SATA drivers.

With my Gigabyte 990FXA-UD 3 mobo I also got a brand new Corsair Neutron SSD drive.

First off I of course changed controller to ACHI and the first thing I did after Windows 7 64 bit installation was to install AMD Chipset Driver 13.1.

After I did that i ran the Windows evaluation and got 6,7 on disk performance. Tried to change to the MS Standard ACHI driver and then I got 7,9. Once again tried the AMD driver and once again 6,7.

Is it really that big difference? I really thought that the AMD driver would perform better or at least the same? Or is it just the evaluation or have I done something wrong here?

Would be happy if someone could give me an advice

"Enable write caching on the device" VS RAIDXpert

Setup

Windows 7 SP1
Latest RAID Drivers
Latest motherboard bios (Crosshair V Formula)
RAID 0 array setup using RAIDXpert

Device Manager

Disk drives --> AMD 2+0 Strip/Raid0 --> Double click --> Enable write caching on the device

RAIDXpert

Logical Drive View --> Settings

Now..

In Device Manager "Enable write caching on the device" is not checked by default.

This value though can be changed via RAIDXpert.

This is what happens

If we check the "No Cache" option and apply the setting this will change the "Enable write caching on the device" setting in Device Manager to be checked.

If we check either the "Read Cache" or "Read Ahead" then the "Enable write caching on the device" in Device Manager will be unchecked.

Is this what is meant to be happening ?

Using RAIDXpert, "No Cache" performance using AS SSD with 4K writes is arnd 60 MB/s, using "Read Ahead" performance is arnd 120 MB/s.

The thing is, this disables the "Enable write caching on the device" setting in Device Manager, but wherever I have read about optimizing SSD performance it is said that this setting needs to be enabled, hence the reason I am somewhat perplexed by what I am seeing.

So hopefully someone can chime in and offer their experience/opinions on this issue.
