Flash memory prices back on the rise?

I was cruising Newegg today just browsing and have noticed that the prices of SSDs are back on the rise. Drives which only a couple of days ago were selling for sub $1/GiB are now back over that, across all capacities 60-512GB and several top manufacturers. The new Samsung drives don't count as they are off the fairly large sale from their launch price and are now in line with the king of performance, OCZ. I know that DDR3 chips are going back up, but I don't remember seeing anything about Flash chips.

Google calls for education reforms

Google is calling for major Australian educational reforms, warning that the economy will suffer unless more computer science graduates and digital entrepreneurs are produced.

The US-based tech giant wants far greater emphasis on computing and engineering subjects in order to grow the local digital sector, which it believes will be crucial to the nation's fortunes once the mining boom ends.

"This is an opportunity for the country, this is an opportunity for our kids, this is an opportunity for our economy," Google Australia engineering director Alan Noble said on Wednesday.

"If we don't do it, yes, we're going to be hosed because we can't continue to rely on the same old industries."

The call comes a fortnight after Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter creator Jack Dorsey appeared in a video promoting the learning of computer coding in US schools.

Mr Noble said Australia must foster a similar awareness about the importance of tech subjects.

He also called for better investor and financial support for tech start-ups and wider awareness of the possibilities within the sector.

The former Silicon Valley entrepreneur was speaking on the sidelines of a two-day summit, convened by Google in Sydney, with 50 industry identities invited to discuss ways of making digital start-ups a national priority.

Matt Barrie, CEO of Sydney-based outsourcing firm freelancer, accused Australians of being complacent about the technology industry and agreed education reform was needed.

"We are just so complacent about building up these industries - one hundred per cent asleep at the wheel," Mr Barrie said.

"We don't do anything about our school curriculum, while countries like the UK and Estonia are teaching their kids from primary school computer science, we are stuck with a backwards, antiquated system of education."

Mr Barrie pointed to the rapid growth of Facebook and said Australians have the potential to develop similarly successful tech businesses, boosting both personal and national wealth.

Michael Fox, co-CEO and co-founder of internet retail firm Shoes of Prey, agreed that there is a shortage of tech skills in Australia.

"The traditional thought (of parents) is 'I want my son or my daughter to be a doctor or lawyer because there's going to be lots of jobs in those industries'," he said.

But where can I even buy a monitor that can work togetherwith my 7970 videocard at 120 Hz 3D in europe , all the monitors in the ATI FAQ list are NOT for sale over here at all.

So is there any one out there that can point me to a good 120 Hz 3D 27 inch monitor , pref with displayport?

Lets just say right now i am more then displeased with AMD atm. I bought a graphics card 6 months ago right off the shelf at best buy was around $175.00 and i cant play a game that was released earlier that year.

My brother bought a video card (Nvidia) the same day, for the same amount of money and his system runs all games on max setting, and i sit here trying to OC (over clock) crap.

There was a time in which ATI was well respected as a video card maker, I dont know what happened but well let's just say i will not be purchasing another AMD product.

Yea but look at Sony, they're selling both their New York and Tokyo buildings because they're so strapped. If I were an investor, now is the time I'd buy a big chunk of AMD stock. Everyone is shipping lower volumes, which shows up especially bad after the many booming years.

But computer hardware isn't what it used to be just a few years ago, I think the biggest reason shipments are going lower is because people don't need to upgrade to run the latest software. Look at the 3-4 year old hardware out there, it is still plenty fast for many segments, and since nobody uses AMD chips in their tablets except Apple (whose stock is plummeting and sales plummeting as well) and "next generation consoles" (the new XBOX and PS4) are not being made yet (which will take millions of AMD products)...It'll get better, especially as the new AMD management gets settled in.

Maybe it's good I'm not an investor, I'd either be a millionaire or flat busted

Ok so heres the deal, I believe that my ram on my gaming pc may be dying and am looking to upgrade it to something a lot better than what I've currently got.

My current pc specs are as follows:

Operating system- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU- AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 45nm Technology

RAM- G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) ('Yes I know this sucks in comparison to most ram sticks, but I was new at choosing parts for a custom build pc and didn't have much help from my pc knowledgeable friend')

Motherboard- ASUSTek M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (AM3)

Graphics- PowerColor Radeon AX7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0x16 HDCP

So yeah that is my basic setup. I recently acquired the graphics card to replace 2 old Radeon HD 5770 1GB crossfire setup. What I'm looking for is something really good that will support my gaming habits from playing Guild Wars 2 to Borderlands 2 to all the Bioshock games to Minecraft, etc... I'm looking to stay with buying the ram from newegg cause they seem to be the cheapest place to buy from.

Thanks for any help given. I'm really needing to get this new ram as soon as possible. Between the freezing up and random blue screens, this is starting to get on my last nerve. Once again thanks for any help. n_n

Also can someone give me layman terms/explanations about Timing and Cas Latency in RAM. For instance, how do you tell what's best?

What i meant to ask here is, i'm organising a LAN party for the first time and me being a PC technician i have to set up the network (not a biggie, i know) but i was wondering if you guys could give me some handy tips to make everything run smooth (problems that you know will most likely occur from your own experience) And what would be the best way to set everything up so that i'm not needed with every single gamer who wants to install his PC there

Hello friends! I was playing with PC configurator, to see how my ol'pal can be upgraded, when i thought about this idea- would'nt it be fun to play game in cyber universe, one resembling this from Tron-Legacy, where items are computer parts made by one of those two corporations? Just think 'bout it- players fighting with each other for side they choose, using in battle GPU to maintain theyr skills that are programs, where your strenght is based on power of your CPU, stamina on temperature of core, life on stability of your main program, and ram's limit how many items/skills you can use at one time. Where PC parts are items based on real products from Intel and AMD, and theyr statistics and traits are based on performance test, for example: 3,4GH Phenom X4 allows you to spend 3400 power-points on four things/skills/attacks simultanously, while one core is forced to divide its power, if more than one is used. Gameplay would be clasic- two starting grounds with training places, capitols and some quest, and between them there would be Battle Grounds- several prowinces that can be taken over by each side. There would be also mobs based on viruses and pc programs. What do all of you think about my idea?

We have all recieved our share of spam. I would bet everyone has won a lottery in the UK or Nigeria, has had a long lost relative in europe die and leave us a fortune, been asked to help hide some money for a poor Communist downtrodden person in a country we can't pronounce, etc, etc. Well, today I recieved the ultimate. A email guaranteed to get me to open it. I don't mean to brag, but..I recieved a e-mail from Howie Mandel. This massive headcuts and management unable to show a more convincing response to financial troubles than firing people makes me wonder where is AMD going?

What's the deal with time? The posts' times are really off...by hours. Not a big deal, but when it is 7am my time, and I see a post that was made at 9pm..it throws my whole time/space thing out of kilter. My memory is not what it used to be. Also, my memory is not what it used to be.

My Corsair H60 Review

As some of you may know, who knows with the way this forum has been going, I just switched (today actually) from a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 with a Delta jet engine to a Corsair H60 with my stock case fan (as exhaust/pull) and included fan (as intake/push). And I have to say...IT'S QUIET AGAIN! After so long with that Xigmatek, even before the Delta fan, it was so loud, even at idle. But now with this H60, even with the fans at 100%, it's whisper quiet, really the only noticeable sound is air moving, which 90% of that is from my front intakes. It is so quiet, I can run my TV at half the volume level I did before and could even go more quiet. As for efficiency...I'm sitting here, sweating, ambient temp 78°F, and the core temps are idling at 40°C. Prime95 "Blend" test picks it up to, well, to high, but this IC Diamond TIM hasn't had time to spread. Yes I know it says it doesn't but it does a bit. When I installed it and ran Prime95 it topped out at about 54°C, dunno what's happened now, but I'm not worried. If it keeps up I might reapply the TIM (or add more) tomorrow. Encoding a movie, which hammers all 4 cores at around 85%, which is the highest real world situation I can think of as games don't hammer it that hard and Prime95 is synthetic and artificial, it tops out at 52°C core temp (remember, ambient is 78°F / 25.6°C) Also, since the mounting brackets are fixed, this thing is a dream to apply, much easier than that Xigmatek I had...Or any AMD heatsink with that sliding mounting bracket.

Now, the Artic Silver Articlean, This stuff. At first I didn't want to get it, after all, it's $8, but I decided to anyway. Now, I've had to clean heatsinks before, several times, but with this stuff it's an entirely different beast. Before I would use 91% alcohol, a rag, and elbow grease. With this stuff, it's a few drops, let it set, wipe off, repeat once for good measure (as I was using a cheap paper napkin this time which isn't very absorbent), put on the second stage and wipe off. I tell you it's a dream, plus with only a few drops each time you'll have to order 3 or more tubes of TIM before you buy more of this stuff. So, at $7.45 (and free shipping)...I've wasted $7.45 on far worse stuff than this. So especially if you use Diamond based TIM, -get this-, you won't be sorry.

Web security protocol HSTS wins proposed standard status

A Web security protocol designed to protect Internet users from Internet hijackings due to unencrypted Web sites has won approval as a proposed standard.

A steering group for the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) gave its blessing to a draft of HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), an opt-in security enhancement in which Web sites prompt browsers accessing it to always interact with it over a secure connection.

Web browsers complying with the policy will automatically switch insecure links to site to a secure version of the site, using "https," without the Web surfer having to remember to type that in the URL bar.

HSTS is designed to deflect HTTP session hijacking, in which limited encryption used on many popular Web sites put user accounts at risk of compromise by someone snooping on session traffic between the user's computer and the site's server. Sites typically encrypt the username and password as they are transmitted, but unless the entire Web session is encrypted with "https," or secure hypertext transfer protocol, someone sniffing the network could capture the cookie information and use that to access the accounts.

Whether the proposal is accepted as a standard depends on its degree of technical maturity and whether there is a general consensus that the protocol provides significant benefit to the Internet community.

The technology is already supported by sites and services such as *****, Blogspot, and Etsy. It's also included in the Chrome, Firefox 4, and Opera 12 Web browsers. However, Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Apple's Safari have not yet embraced HSTS.

Remember that toilet paper commercial where they asked you to vote on if you put your toilet paper so it unrolls over the top or under the bottom? Well, here's a fun little survey, do you put your optical drives at the top or bottom of your tower? Convention tells us that optical drives go at the top, floppy (anyone still use those?) drives and card readers in the middle, and hard drives/SSDs at the bottom. But what do you do, follow or break convention?

Personally I mount my ODDs at the bottom (both of them), hard drives at the top (until I replace them with SSDs in the next few weeks).

Corsair H60

By the grace of God I was finally able to find a good job that'll put about $1400 a month in my pocket (as in after deductions and expenses), so after payday at the end of the month the first thing I'm thinking about getting is a Corsair H series cooler, namely the H60, for a couple of reasons. One is that this Delta fan is getting on my nerves extremely quickly, anything over 40% and it becomes audible over my HD 5970 (which says a lot). Second is this Xigmatek is getting a bit old, a couple of the topmost fins have come off over time, and it's possible that one of the heatpipes could be dry, as the last time I took it off for a good cleaning (a few weeks ago) there was some brown very foul smelling liquid on the CPU heatspreader. And lastly, I'd just like a little bit lower temps. Granted with near 26°C ambient temps I idle at 39°C and load anywhere between 48-55°C depending on the program and how threaded it is, I'd like to see it a touch lower at least, or even the same with much less noise. I don't use Intel so I don't have to worry about 60°C+ temps so I think the H80 and H100 are a bit overkill.

So, would it be possible if I just take off the fan which ships with it and attach it to my fan which came with my case? No big deal if I can't, I've got a couple of fan headers in that area of the motherboard for power, but it's just the fan controls are hardwired to the case (idiotic Antec) and I'd rather not have to cut them.

Ideally I'd just clamp it to my side panel but Antec uses a plastic clip mount instead of a screw mount for the panel (Antec really are idiots).

Or, even more ideally, use the stock exhaust as a pull and one that comes with it (until I replace it) as a push, but I'm not sure if the H60 can mount two fans

Microsoft took down its online Gadget gallery this summer and issued a safety warning to Windows Vista and Windows 7 users about using the desktop miniprograms on their computers. Researchers found security flaws, and that certain gadgets from “untrusted sources” (like malicious hackers) could leave the computer vulnerable to infiltration or takeover from an intruder.

In response to the threat, Microsoft recommends applying a security update and disabling desktop Gadgets and the Windows Sidebar. The company has an advisory on its site that explains the issue, the Windows versions involved — and provides links to a Microsoft Fixit Solution script that automatically disables the Windows Sidebar and Gadgets feature.
